Glottochronology is an approach in historical linguistics that attempts to determine when and how two languages diverged from a common source or proto-language.

Glottochronology usually uses lexicostatistics to determine how many shared cognates two languages have and how long is has been since the two languages diverged.

The study of glottochronology is controversial.
