The International Phonetic Alphabet was created in 1889 by the International Phonetic Association which was founded in 1886 in Europe. The IPA symbols have been modified and expanded since then and have become the most widely used standard for transcribing sounds of various languages.

The following images show the vowel, consonant and other symbols used.
