Variance

Variance is useful when you want to know the difference between each value and the mean value so that you can get some idea of the dispersion of your data. It's calculated as an number and the larger it is, the more spread out your data set is. This means it can measure how likely any one of your values is going to differ from the mean value.

Experiment-Resources.com has an excellent page on statistical variance.
