Definition

Also known as an LWC a language of wider communication is a language used by people as a medium of communication across language or cultural barriers. The language may or may not be the L1 of anyone involved in the communication.

Outside sociolinguistics, it is more commonly known as a lingua franca.

Examples

  • English as used by pilots.
  • Hausa used across many countries in west Africa.
